Jochen Kassan is a sedimentologist and reservoir modeller with 20 years postgraduate experience in consulting to the oil and gas industry. His expertise spans the range of reservoir characterisation from petrology to reservoir modelling. Jochen has conducted detailed reservoir characterisation studies using drill core and wireline log data from sedimentary basins in Australia, SE Asia and North Africa, covering a broad range of clastic depositional settings fluvial, deltaic, shallow and deep marine. His special interests lie in sedimentology from drill core and the integration of sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy into static reservoir models. He has been involved as a reservoir modeller and sedimentologist in a number of FDP and integrated reservoir characterisation studies for clients in Australia and overseas. Jochen has conducted professional training courses for geoscience professionals and engineers for international oil and gas companies since 1998, some as part of the Schlumberger NExT training programmes. This includes class-room courses in sequence stratigraphy, clastic sedimentology, reservoir characterisation, reservoir modelling and geostatistics, as well as field courses to outcrops and modern depositional environments provided annually. He has maintained an active interest in academic research and training, resulting in a series of publication and conference presentations. Jochen is a visiting research fellow at the Australian School of Petroleum at the University of Adelaide and is involved in the supervision and examination of PhD theses there.
His formal qualifications include an MSc in Petroleum Geology Aberdeen and a PhD in sedimentology (University of Queensland). Jochen founded Whistler Research in 1993 and is a director of the company. Currently he is managing the Whistler Research office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
